Hawaii Wildfires Recovery Fund

The Town of Palm Beach United Way Hawaii Wildfires Recovery Fund was created to help provide resources to individuals and families affected by the devastating wildfires in Hawaii. 100% of funds will be distributed to vetted nonprofit organizations providing direct support to people impacted by the wildfires.

The wind-driven fires broke out in early August 2023, primarily on the island of Maui. At least 115 people have died from the fires and hundreds are still missing, making the Maui wildfire the deadliest U.S. wildfire in more than a century. Over 11,000 people have been displaced. Around 2,200 structures were destroyed or damaged in Maui, 86% of them residential. Damage from the fires has been estimated at nearly $6 billion.

Agency Beneficiaries

The Americares team is on the ground in Hawaii and assessing the health needs of the community, particularly in the heavily impacted zones on Maui. The agency has received several requests for medical supplies and is in close communication with FEMA, NGOs and local partners. Team members are providing emergency financial assistance, medicines, medical supplies and technical expertise to support the re-establishment of local health services to ensure that everyone has access to the health care they need. Americares is also monitoring the risks of long-term health impacts due to chemicals such as asbestos and lead being released into the air and water.

Global Empowerment Mission has established a temporary hub on the ground in Maui to assist with immediate disaster relief efforts. The agency is providing $100 cash cards to survivors so that they can purchase immediate necessities. An initial $250,000 in cash cards has already been distributed. GEM is offering relocation and short-term accommodation assistance through its Airbnb partnership. The agency will also be offering long-term housing solutions and rebuilding assistance to those whose homes have been severely damaged or destroyed. In addition, the GEM Flew the Coop initiative is delivering pet supplies to families with pets.

World Central Kitchen's Relief Team is on the ground in Maui distributing meals to first responders and families in need. In the first 5 days, the agency distributed more than 16,000 meals, primarily in the towns of Lahaina, Kaanapali, and Napili. World Central Kitchen is also supporting Common Ground Collective and Chef Hui - two organizations who assembled a collective of local chefs to prepare thousands of hot meals out of the kitchen of a community college. After setting up centralized distribution points in the first few days, WCK will now focus more resources on finding pockets of need and meeting people where they live.
