The Town of Palm Beach United Way has met a $100,000 dollar-for-dollar matching challenge from the Cathleen McFarlane Foundation, raising a total of $200,000 through its Nepal Recovery Fund to support emergency relief efforts following the catastrophic flooding in Nepal.
The United Way will distribute $50,000 grants to each of four trusted emergency relief organizations: Americares, Convoy of Hope, Global Empowerment Mission and World Central Kitchen. Each organization has teams, partners or operations actively responding to the crisis and will use the funds to address urgent needs among affected communities.

On August 26, catastrophic flooding and mudslides swept through communities along the Nepal-China border, destroying homes, roads, bridges, power facilities and other critical infrastructure. Thousands of people have been killed or remain missing, and rescue and relief efforts continue, particularly in remote areas that remain difficult to reach.

Fund Distributions
The Nepal Recovery Fund is supporting trusted emergency relief organizations with teams on the ground responding to the devastating flooding in Nepal. These experienced partners are providing critical assistance to communities in need, including prepared meals, non perishable food, clean water, medical care and supplies, household necessities, hygiene items, emergency shelter and support for vulnerable children.
Americares emergency response experts are on the ground in Kathmandu, working with local partners and health organizations to assess and address the urgent health needs of survivors. Americares is providing emergency funding to organizations on the ground and supporting mobile medical teams in the three hardest-hit areas, helping survivors access essential health care, medicines and medical supplies. Teams are also coordinating with frontline health workers and first responders to reach communities whose homes, roads, bridges and health infrastructure have been damaged.
Americares has a long history of responding to disasters in Nepal and across South Asia. Following Nepal’s 2015 earthquake, Americares provided more than $27 million in aid, including medical teams, emergency medicines and supplies to meet survivors’ immediate and long-term health needs. Americares also responded to the 2023 earthquake in western Nepal, providing food, relief supplies, mental health support, tents and blankets, as well as to monsoon flooding in 2019.
Americares will continue working with local partners to identify the most urgent needs and direct resources where they can have the greatest impact, helping restore access to health care for communities affected by the flooding.
Convoy of Hope teams are on the ground in the Rasuwa and Nuwakot districts of Nepal, distributing essential relief supplies to families affected by the disaster. Food, clean drinking water, blankets, clothing, sheltering materials, hygiene items and fortified milk for children are reaching survivors, while Convoy is also assembling household “home kits” to help families begin rebuilding their daily lives. The kits include sleeping mats, cooking stoves and fuel, pots and utensils, cleaning and laundry supplies, bedding, solar lights with chargers, mosquito nets and other necessities.
Working with existing church partners and local government, Convoy of Hope is purchasing supplies locally and regionally to get assistance to families as quickly as possible. Multiple truckloads of home kits and other essential supplies are currently assembled and en route to affected communities, including areas that remain difficult to reach because of damaged roads and infrastructure.
Convoy of Hope remains committed to providing life-sustaining help as survivors face the enormous challenge of rebuilding their homes and communities. The organization will continue adapting its response to meet the most urgent needs as conditions evolve.
GEM USA and GEM Asia teams are on the ground in Nepal, working around the clock to support thousands of people impacted by this devastating disaster. Working alongside local partners and government counterparts, GEM teams have delivered critical humanitarian supplies to affected communities, including isolated families in Dhunche, where two truckloads of aid were transported after a 19-hour journey through washed-out roads, mud and river crossings. From there, supplies are being moved by helicopter into communities that remain difficult to reach. GEM has also carried out distributions in Belkotgadhi Municipality in Nuwakot District along the Trishuli River, where families lost homes, farmland, livestock, documents and other belongings.
Multiple humanitarian cargo flights are departing from GEM’s headquarters in Miami and its Europe branch in Warsaw, Poland, bringing more than $1 million in critical relief to Nepal. Essential supplies include rice, water, lentils, baby food and formula, diapers, feminine hygiene products, toiletries, cooking oil, clothing and other basic necessities. GEM is also building temporary shelters as families begin the difficult process of rebuilding their lives.
In partnership with Nepal Peace Scouts, GEM has stepped in to care for 40 newly orphaned children, providing safe shelter, nutritious food, clothing, daily care and education for six months. GEM teams will remain on the ground for as long as needed, working with local partners and authorities to reach underserved communities and adapt the response as needs evolve.

World Central Kitchen (WCK) is serving hot meals to families across some of the hardest-hit areas of Nepal, including the Rasuwa and Nuwakot districts. WCK and its local restaurant and community partners are operating community kitchens and serving thousands of meals, including local favorites such as momos and samosas. Teams are reaching communities that have been cut off by damaged roads, bridges and other infrastructure, with some areas accessible only by helicopter or on foot.
WCK is rapidly expanding its kitchen network as conditions allow, moving equipment and supplies into affected communities and working alongside local partners including the Chefs Association of Nepal and Nepal Scouts. In one example of the challenges teams face, a truck carrying kitchen supplies traveled just seven miles in five hours to reach a school in Rasuwa, where WCK established a kitchen to prepare meals as close as possible to families in need.
WCK is adapting its response to the needs and circumstances of each community, providing nourishing meals that offer both sustenance and comfort to families who have lost homes, livelihoods and loved ones. Teams are continuing to monitor conditions and expand operations as needed, remaining in communities for as long as their support is needed.
